     The name Christmas is short for 'Christ's Mass'. A Mass is a kind of Church service. Christmas is a religious festival. It is the day we celebrate as the birthday of Jesus.
“圣诞节”这个名称是“基督弥撒”的缩写。弥撒是教会的一种礼拜仪式。圣诞节是一个宗教节日我们把它当作耶稣的诞辰来庆祝，因而又名耶诞节。

     There are special Christmas services in Christian churches all over the world. But many of the festivities of Christmas do not have anything to do with religion. Exchanging gifts and sending Christmas cards are the modern ways of celebrating the Christmas in the world.
这一天，世界所有的基督教会都举行特别的礼拜仪式。但是有很多圣诞节的欢庆活动和宗教并无半点关联。交换礼物，寄圣诞卡，这都使圣诞节成为一个普天同庆的日子。

     The birth of Jesus had a story: In Nazareth, a city of Galilee. The virgin's name was Mary was betrothed to Joseph. Before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband was minded to put her away secretly. While he thought about these things, Gabriel, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and told him did not be afraid to take Mary as wife. And Mary will bring forth a Son, and he shall call his name, Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.
耶稣的出生是有一段故事的，耶稣是因着圣灵成孕，由童女马利亚所生的。神更派遣使者加伯列在梦中晓谕约瑟，叫他不要因为马利亚未婚怀孕而不要她，反而要与她成亲，把那孩子起名为“耶稣”，意思是要他把百姓从罪恶中救出来。

圣诞节是西方最重要的节日。“圣诞节 Christmas”原是“基督弥撒 Christmass”的缩写。传说记载，12月25日是耶稣的生日，在这一天，世界各地的天主教会都要举行弥撒纪念耶稣的生日。
　　而如今，圣诞节已经从一个宗教节日变成一个世界性的大众节日。人们在节日期间互相祝福，期盼欢乐的新年来临。圣诞节使得这个寒冷的冬日增添了一股暖意，也拉开了年底Season holiday的序幕。但是我们知道关于圣诞节的相关的英语表述是什么吗？


　　让我们先来看一下跟圣诞有关的英语单词与短语：
　　■不同时间概念上的圣诞节的表述有不同的意思。我们来看以下的几组英文表述，它们分别代表了不同的圣诞节的意义。
　　·Christmas Eve：圣诞除夕，也就是圣诞节的前一天。每年的12月24日。这跟我们的大年夜有点相似（NEWYEAR'S EVE）。
　　·Christmas Day：圣诞节当天，每年的12月25日。相当于中国的大年初一的概念。“Everybody goes for various parties to celebrate the festival on Christmas day。”（在圣诞节那天，大家都去参加各种各样的派对来庆祝节日。）
    ·Boxing Day：圣诞节后的第一个工作日，即每年的12月26日，意即“重拳出击的那一天”。
　　·尤其值得注意的是，在西方，还有一个Christmas Season。它是指12月24日至翌年1月6日，我们称之为“圣诞节节期”。也就是经常说的Holiday Season，指的是一整段日子。

　　■Christmas Gift或者Christmas Present：这两个词都可以是表示圣诞礼物的意思。我们经常会说“Here is a Christmas gift for you。”或者“I have a present for your Christmas Day。”即表示要送对方圣诞礼物的意思。

    ■Santa Claus：即圣诞老人的意思。他赶着驯鹿，拉着装满礼物的雪橇挨家挨户给每个孩子送礼物的形象已深深地留在人们的记忆中。

　　■Christmas Tree：圣诞树。与之相关的还有Christmas Decorations（圣诞装饰物）；Christmas Wreath或者Christmas Garland(圣诞花环)；Christmas Crafts(圣诞工艺品)。这些美丽的装点都使得圣诞节变得熠熠生辉。

　　在介绍完了一些跟圣诞节有关的单词和短语之后，接下来在圣诞节中最重要的是人们互相间的祝福。在圣诞节期间，人们见面就会致以热情的祝福和问候。有时候身边碰到几个外国朋友，该怎样和他们一起表达各自的祝福？我们继续来看：

　　■“Merry Christmas！圣诞快乐！”
　　这是最常见，也是最简单的圣诞祝福。在圣诞期间，我们可以对任何人，不管是熟悉的或不熟悉的，甚至是不认识的人，都可以热情的说上一句“Merry Christmas!”。有时候，我们也会一起祝福新年“Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 圣诞快乐，恭贺新禧！”这些句子都相对比较口语化，也是中国人最熟悉的圣诞祝福语。

　　■我们也可以试着用其它不同的句子来表达节日的问候。比如：　“Have a Wonderful Holiday Season!节日快乐！”；“Warmest wishes for a very merry Christmas！衷心祝福圣诞快乐！”这些也都是口语中常用的表示圣诞节日问候的句子，相较“Merry Christmas”，这些句子更偏向于用在互相认识，比较熟悉的人之间。

　　■我们接着来看其它的两个句子：“May you have the best Christmas ever.愿你度过最美好的圣诞节！”；“During this Season may the joy and love of Christmas be yours.圣诞节日里，希望欢乐与爱伴你左右。”
　　这些句子相较前面几个更加正式了一些，经常可以用在各种团体聚会中的致词。

　　■除了这些口头上祝福语，在很多书面的场合，比如英文商务书信或者圣诞卡片（Christmas Card）中的圣诞祝福就显得更加正规了一些，。我们可以来看看以下几句话：“May the Christmas be a time of laughter and real enjoyment for you.愿圣诞不仅是你欢笑的时刻，更是你欣喜的日子。”
　　“Wishing you a sparkling Christmas and bright happy New Year!May the season bring much pleasure to you.愿你的圣诞光彩夺目，愿你的新年灿烂辉煌！佳节快乐！”
    “With the old wish that is ever new, may the greeting do its share toward making your Christmas a pleasant one.老的祝福，却又常新，愿此祝福，使你的圣诞更加愉快圆满。”
    “Forget, forgive, for who may say that Christmas day may ever come to host or guest again. Touch hands!愿知道圣诞节会不断来临的人们，忘却和宽恕以往一切不快，让我们携手共进吧！”
　　相较之下，这些句子的用词更加讲究，句子结构也比较复杂。它们并不仅仅只有best wishes/regards这些简单的表示祝福的词眼，更具有很强的文学性，更适合用于正规的书面场合。
