LINGSHAN BUDDHIST SCENIC AREA: Situated just south of Longshan Mountain 25k outside the vibrantly cultural city of Wuxi, the Lingshan Buddhist Scenic Area is dedicated to embracing the spiritual beauty of Buddhism. Lingshan serves as a symbol of Wuxi City with its significance as a Buddhist attraction recognized both throughout China and abroad. Nearly 2 million foreign visitors experience the stunning magnificence of Lingshan annually.
Development of the Lingshan Buddhist Scenic Area first broke ground in 1994. The area is composed of a series of articulately designed Buddhist sites including the Lingshan Grand Buddha-the world's tallest standing statue of Sakyamuni, the ancient Xiangfu Temple, a series of dynamic musical sculptures known as Nine Dragons Bathing Baby Buddha, as well as a collection of unique Buddhist locations scattered throughout the park.
A cultural park holding rich the serene beauty of Buddhism, Lingshan integrates ancient cultural ideas and customs with modern civilization, combining the profound insight of Buddhism with a continual thirst for the spirit of Sakyamuni in today’s China. The modern construction of Lingshan speaks to an invigoration of ancient culture thriving in modern society.
LINGSHAN GRAND BUDDHA: Silently towering at 88m above the ground, the Lingshan Grand Buddha is the true centerpiece of the Lingshan Scenic Area. The Buddha stands a full 42m (138ft) taller than the Statue of Liberty, situated alongside Taihu Lake in the city of Wuxi. Amidst a picturesque backdrop, the statue emulates the peaceful serenity of traditional Buddhist culture.
The contemporary significance of Lingshan Grand Buddha lives in the thriving nature of Buddhism as it has evolved historically into today's society.
LINGSHAN BUDDHIST PALACE:
Situated along the eastern edge of Lingshan, the Lingshan Buddhist Palace stands as a magnificent spiritual sanctuary within the park. Incorporating impressive artistic, and spiritual concepts, the Buddhist Palace is a structure destined to behold great historical significance.
The palace was designed in the Kazo tower style, combining architectural elements native to Chinese Buddhism, as well as traditional Buddhist order, resulting in a stunning interpretation of ancient Buddhist construction fundamentals. The interior of the palace is divided into an art corridor, meeting area, and meal area organized in a clean bilateral symmetry. Designed to accommodate a variety of functions, the palace can hold international meetings of various scales, thematic exhibitions, art exhibitions, displays, and assemblies. The palace is host to a number of activities that highlight the unique artistic splendor of different Buddhist sects and culture throughout the year.
The palace operates as a museum, exhibition hall, concert hall, performance house, and art corridor, displaying the rich colorful progression of Buddhist culture, therefore gaining it recognition as China's contemporary Buddhist art museum.
Within the palace is the Aisle Hall. Stretching almost 80m with an arching roof that reaches 18m in height, the Aisle Hall is lined with grand canvases depicting Buddhist stories. The oil paintings strike a delicate balance between art and culture, expressing the beauty of Buddhist imagery along its walls and ceiling.
The arching 60m high ceiling of the magnificent Tower Hall is a truly powerful space. The walls and arched ceiling are clad in numerous Dong Yang wooden carvings engraved with Buddhist scriptures.
Considered the most impressive space within the Buddhist Palace, the Holy Alter is a vibrant spectacle of immense proportions. A theater in the round, the Holy Alter functions both as a meeting and performing space. A daily performance illustrating the historical legend of Buddha incorporates music and drama, igniting the spectacular wonder of the Holy Alter. The performance known as the Eulogy of Lingshan Lucky, recreates the humble story of Sakyamuni's evolution into Buddha through dedication to doctrine and hard work.
